In the United States of America the boating industry is a big, big marketplace and it covers all aspects of boating such as fishing boats right up to yachts. Whether you own a dingy or a yacht at some point in time you are going to have to think about caring for your boat and boat care is a massive business all of its own.

Most folk desire to keep their pride and joy looking, that’s a fact. But what do we mean when we talk about boat care? Well it can be anything from waxing the hull to filling in major scrapes. Boat care is a primary issue in the overall scheme of things and it’s nearly as important as knowing how to navigate one!

If proper boat care and maintenance is not maintained, the boat could fall into disrepair which could prove disastrous if you are stuck in the middle of the ocean.

Let’s start off by looking at waxes and cleaners that are available on the market today. It is important to choose the right cleaner for your type of boat and storage. Saltwater boats and freshwater boats often require different kinds of cleaning to ensure the longevity of the boat. It is also proper boat care to wash and wax your boat thoroughly before putting it into storage.

If you clean, wax and store your boat properly it will be in a great condition to use when you decide to bring the boat out again.

About Boat Care And Products.

You, as a consumer, must do some level of research in order to obtain the best product for your boat as there are many available. Obtaining a decent soap is the primary concern for you.

If a good soap is used it will remove all the dirt from your boat but leave the protective wax coating on the hull.

The one product that you should always have in your cleaning toolkit is apray cleaner. The surface of the boat collects all manner of particles and dirt such as fish blood, bird droppings and everyday grease.

If you fail to get these type of stains off it could damage your boat in the longer term. Another helpful cleaning and protectiuve product is a good wax. It helps protect the surface of your craft and keeps the natural color.

Saltwater boats can experience build up and corrosion of their paint. Freshwater boats experience mold from the algae and slime found in lake water. These are just a few of the products needed for proper boat care. A good rule of thumb is to always research which products are right for your particular boat.

Although it is incredibly fun, rafting can provide some risks. This is the very reason why you should plan your trip with a reputable rafting company and be prepared. You can never be too careful when it comes to things like these, so part of planning a good trip will include choosing a reliable company, knowing where to go and knowing what to bring.

You should never risk going with an adventure company that you are not familiar with. Do some background research before signing up with any company. Know how long they have been in the business and how qualified their employees are. Check on equipment to be provided as well.

Find out what class river you should be rafting on. Rivers are classified according to their difficulty and the skills needed in order to boat on it. You don’t want to end up on a ride that is too hard for that you won’t want to try rafting again. If you’ve had a little more practice then you can go on rivers with higher classes.

There are specific river classes for each skill level when it comes to white water rafting. For families and first timers it is advisable to go on a river that is either class 1 or 2. Rivers under this class have little rough areas and will not require a lot of maneuvering.

Those are seeking more adventure and are more experienced with rafting will find class 3 and 4 rivers better. Under these classes there may be more waves and some significant drops in the river. Maneuvering will definitely be needed to get around.

California can be an ideal place for White Water Rafting. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to this or have tried it out before. The best rivers to raft on are South Fork American River, the Kaweah River and the Tuolumne River. You won’t need to worry about anything, there’s something for everybody.

The South Fork American River is the friendliest among the three rivers, which is no wonder why it is the most boated river. The Kaweah River on the other hand runs in the class 4 category and provides an exciting ride. The Tuolumne River will provide both excitement and a scenic view.

It’s not just about finding the perfect place and who to go on this adventure with. It’s essential to pack the right gear as well. Don’t forget your sun block and moisturizer since you will be spending a lot of time under the sun. Also, bring clothes that are light and will dry easily.

If you’re interested in water sports, chances are you’ve already heard many things about wakeboarding. It’s an extreme game that has gathered a lot of fans since its inception in the late 1980s. The sport involves riding a wakeboard over wakes or what riders call “whitewash ripples” caused by the surface trails of a boat. The boat pulls the rider along as he maneuvers and plays tricks on his board. In wakeboarding competitions, the more difficult the move the rider executes, the more points he gets.

If you want to try out the sport, you have to get your hands on quality wakeboards, like CWB wakeboards. CWB wakeboards are among the best wakeboards in the market today. These wakeboards are specially designed by professional wakeboarders who have a vast knowledge of the sport. They know that it’s very important to match the wakeboard with the rider. CWB wakeboard designers take into consideration the weight of the rider as well as his level: beginner, intermediate or advance.

For beginners, CWB’s flagship wakeboard known as the “Ride” is the best option. It is specifically designed to give wakeboard beginners their first wakeboarding high on the surf. The wakeboard’s rocker is very flat with a wide surface and a sharp edge that cuts the water. It also has a molded kicktail with a tip protector made of EVA. It ensures that the boat is scratch-free from behind. The board also has four fiberglass fins.

The CWB Board Company is very responsible with their products. They encourage riders to use their boards and accessories properly. For instance, they should make sure that their boards are of the right size.

It is advised that the rider should wet his feet and binding before wakeboarding. It is advised also that the wakeboards, bindings and fins are checked for wear, tear, cracks or loose screws before using.

by Rodney Lister

By now yo should have read the first articles on choosing the right board, how to paddle, and getting out through the waves. So next is the fun part, the part you’ve been waiting for.

Catching the wave:

When you get out behind the breakers, sit on the surfboard so that you are straddling it just below the center of the board. Sitting in this spot makes it easier to turn the surfboard around, when you see a good wave coming.

When you straddle your board, face towards the horizon so no freak swells surprise you and break right on top of you. You should also note a landmark on shore and continually check that you haven’t drifted away from it.

Now you have to choose a good wave, so pick one that looks full enough to pick you up, but isn’t just about to break or dump you. You will learn this with experience, so turn your board around, lay down with your body positioned correctly and paddle according to the article on paddling.

If you are too far back on the board, you will have too much resistance, and the wave will not be able to pick you up, passing beneath you while you drop off the back of the wave.

Where as if you are to far forward on the board, you will end up flipping over or tumbling down the face of the wave. You need to stay forward enough to get the speed, but keep your chest up and lean back as you drop. Ultimately you would pop to your feet, just as begin to feel the board take, but when learning you want to wait until you have dropped down to the flat water in front of the wave.

When paddling, go as hard as you can, and keep the board heading straight into shore. Once you get a feel for it, you can start to paddle with an angle along the wave, but in the beginning you just want to catch the bottom of the wave, so head straight and drop down to the trough.

Once you have caught your first wave you are going to need to stand up or pop up to your feet, so we will cover this lesson in the next article, so stay tuned.

Getting To Your Feet -

by Rodney Lister

Getting To Your Feet -

You should practice the process on dry land before getting in the water. This way you will know what you have to do, and have a clearer picture in your mind.

Place your board on the sand, being careful of the fins, then lay on the board and practice the motion of paddling then quickly place your hands on the rails between the nose and center, pushing up so your arms extend straight, then in a single motion pop both knees towards your stomach so your feet land on the board, keep your dominant leg to the tail of the board and the other one just above mid point.

When you move to position, stay low keeping your center of gravity low. Try to keep your weigh central, if you have to keep holding your board thats fine, so long as you get on your feet as quickly as possible.

If you crouch, and keep the weight on the center of the board, you will find it easier to balance, and all you should be worried about now is staying up.

Go over this process enough times on the sand, so that it is imprinted in your mind. Once you get out in the water, you tend to forget things in all the rush and excitement.

Once you catch the wave, balance yourself on the board, don’t be to hasty to stand up. When your steady, then quickly pop onto your feet. Keep your hands on the board for balance.

When you get your balance sorted, you can begin to stand up quicker, and even start to pop up when the board drops down the face of the wave.

Now you’ve covered the basics, you just have to practice, practice, practice. So best of Luck.

Kayaking is an ever popular experience for adventure sports enthusiasts. Previously, kayaking was a singles endeavor, one person per boat. Now, pairs and even families can take advantage of tandem kayaks. Together, you can travel gorgeous oceans, still fresh-water lakes, roaring rapids or hidden tributaries in a tandem kayak.

Tandem kayaks are also called doubles since they can hold two people in the same boat. A tandem kayak is really ideal for the newbie who is a bit shy of being on the water alone. Team up, feel secure and share the fun of a tandem kayak.

There are no rules about who can travel with you, anyone from your kids, parents or even your pet can accompany you on a kayaking trip. The best thing about tandem kayaks is that second person doesn’t have to paddle if they don’t wish to or are just not physically up to the challenge. They can merely sit while you take them on the most adventurous and thrilling tour of your chosen waterways.

Tandem kayaks are more wide that the one-man version which simply makes a double boat more stable allowing both passengers a safe day on the water.

Tandem kayaking is a good opportunity for families. Very young children can always be seated in Mom or Dad’s lap, or if old enough, the kids can be seated between parents where you can keep tabs on them, ensuring a safe trip.

The most important question you need to ask before heading out is “Who is sitting where?” To ensure a smooth and safe journey, seating arrangement must be considered.

Size and weight of individuals, gear and even paddles must be accounted for when dividing into teams. The kayaker with more experience should be seated in the back of the kayak for each boat. Also, the greatest weight should be at the rear as of the boat.

Every pair of boaters needs to work together as a team. If both of the riders is are paddling, the kayak makes very good speed across the water. Try to paddle in rhythm for maximum efficiency. Keeping a steady rhythm is the quickest kayaking method when paddles aren’t clashing.

Now your ready to make your way out through the surf, try to choose the calmest section of water. A lot of surfers use a rip to help them get out, it is calmer and the current helps pull them out.

If your just beginning you might want to stay in the shore breaks, or find a nice headland, the waves are easier on a headland, because you can stay wide of them when paddling out.

The next step is getting through those waves that you can’t get the board over without getting pushed back. You can use one of two options, the first is rolling you and your board over. If you have a Malibu or extra large board, then this will be the only real viable option because it will be to hard to push it under the water. So as you approach within two feet of the wave, simply grab the rails of the surfboard and roll it over.

As you roll the board over, you will go under water while holding the rails. The wave will pass above you, and over the underside of the surfboard. You should now continue to roll the board back over, as you surface, the wave should now be continuing behind you, and you can start paddling again.

The next thing to learn is duck diving, this might not be possible till you get a smaller board, but lets cover it anyway. For the best results, you should build up plenty of speed, to let the momentum push you through. As you come within a couple of feet of the wave, grab the rails half way between the center of the surfboard and the nose.

Then rise up and push all your weight down on your hands, pushing the nose under, then point your head down, and let your body follow. Once your body is just under the surface, use your knee on your dominant leg to push down on the tail of your board, your leg should bend pushing the tail under water.

Release the weight from your hands, allowing the nose back up, the buoyancy of the board should push you back out of the water nose first. You should quickly pass under the wave and surface behind it, regain your balance and continue to paddle.

Don’t get frustrated with the surf, getting out is the hardest part for everyone. Begin in small swells, and just keep practicing, you will get better, fitter, and stronger with time.

Stay tuned, the next article in the series is the fun part, how to catch a wave.

Time to start working those arms.

by Rodney Lister

Time to start working those arms.

Before reading this article, you should have read the first article on choosing a board, and have a sturdy old larger board ready to go.

If your board is too small, it will sink below the surface a bit, and create drag in the tail end, meaning it will take more effort when paddling.

What ever size your board is you should get a feel for it before jumping right in the surf.

While it’s certainly not necessary, practicing in a river or bay first will allow you to get your position on your board more comfortably. This way you will be more confident on your board, and not have to shift around so much when heading out.

Once your ready to paddle in small surf, start in calmer water to get the feel for it, walk out a bit, and then lay on your board so your chest is just above central, and your weight is in the middle, once you feel stable, lean forward to level out the board.

The further back you lay on the board the more resistance you will encounter, you don’t won’t the nose to far up in the air, as the tail will drag in the water more.

Once you get to choppy water and whitewash, keep your chest raised off the board as much as possible, it will help the nose of the board rise over the little stuff. If that nose goes under you will loose momentum, and possible even get pushed backwards.

You should be using deep strokes, and have your hands cupped to get the most speed out of your board. By creating more resistance with your paddling and using more energy on each stroke you will move much faster.

While you might use more energy on your strokes, you will get out faster, and have to deal with less sets of waves, so in reality you will use less energy overall.

You feel comfortable and your paddling well, now you need to get through the larger waves, so watch out for the next installment, rolling your board over and duckdiving.

The popularity of kayaking as an adventure sport is on the rise. It’s difficult to pass up the prospect of getting outside and enjoying nature while giving your upper body a workout. There are so few recreational sports that give that kind of opportunity, it’s no wonder kayaking is experiencing a growing status.

Of all the recreational water sports, kayaking is really the most intimate. Just the water and you forming a relationship that can be spiritual or adversarial. Whichever the case, kayaking is undeniably more popular.

If the beauty of kayaking is already in your soul, you might be considering the purchase of a boat. There are some very expensive kayaks on the market. New equipment is the most expensive alternative. Did you know that a good used kayak can be bought at first-rate prices providing you with the quality that meets your needs and style.

First, determine what type of kayak you need. Kayaks come in five classifications based on intention of use: expedition styles, day touring and general recreation, whitewater and surf models. In each of these classifications you will see folding, inflatable and rigid kayak models.

Rigid kayaks are made of several materials. A plastic kayak is the most durable, least expensive and heaviest option. Wood kayaks are often beautiful. Many kayakers build wood kayaks from a kit, but they do need regular maintenance. The fiberglass kayak is the most expensive option and the lightest style. They can be damaged more easily than the other two options but are the easiest to repair.

You need to decide which classification of kayak you need. The class will determine some important features like storage capacity for longer excursions. The weight of the boat may be an issue if you will always be handling it alone. Storage of the kayak when not in the water might lead you toward the folding canvas or inflatable style.

Inspect the potential purchase carefully looking for any damage that would preclude it from consideration. Check for uneven patches and divots in the hull surface. fiberglass repairs can be covered with paint so check for surface paint discrepancies. A patched inflatable kayak should be considered carefully as these repairs can be tricky. Plastic boats while very durable are very hard to fix. You will want to avoid a plastic hull that looks unsound or repaired.

Look for the high end big name kayaks on the used market. You could get lucky and find a really high quality boat at a fraction of a new kayak price. This approach can get you a boat that is better than you could have afforded if buying new and makes a better investment. If you don’t intend to race the boat, then a quality used kayak can really put you in some great equipment.
