Antarctica Cruises Offer Comfort and Adventure

by Corinne Leo

Antarctica is a mysterious continent at the bottom of the world. Technically a desert due to extreme lack of precipitation, it is nevertheless covered in ice and snow all year round. There are no permanent settlements there, although there are numerous scientific stations. Despite the inhospitable nature of the climate, it is increasingly popular as a destination for tourists with a taste for more exotic vacations than the standard “fun in the sun” setup. Most tourists come on cruise ships, and the Best Antarctic Cruises are the ones that offer a wide variety of ways to experience this unique location.

What will strike you first and stay with you the longest is probably the land- and seascape. One of the most untouched locations on our planet, Antarctica is an icy land constantly reshaped by the wind and the water. The icy blue ocean is the perfect setting for the bright white land. Taking everything in is a struggle-the magnitude of the scenery is quite striking.

In addition to the spectacle of the land and sea, there are the dwellers thereon and therein to amaze you as well. The penguins will probably be at the top of your list-and rightly so-but there are other bird species that are interesting to watch. There are also seals that cavort in the water. And speaking of water, the giant denizens of the deep, the whales, are frequently in evidence as well. Taking the time to watch them is also a sight to behold.

Not everything on your trip will feature you passively drinking in the sights, however; there are ample opportunities on most cruises to get out and about. You can head out by sea on a kayak adventure or a closer look at the glaciers in a launch. Or you can take to the land and go camping, listening to the ice sheets settle under you in the soft winds of the Antarctic night. You can also go hiking and/or cross-country skiing if you want to venture away from the shoreline deeper into the icy heart of the continent. And while you’re there, do not forget to take some pictures to remember your trip (and amaze your friends).

Being on a cruise ship has its advantages as well. A certain measure of comfort will always be available to you, with interesting cuisine to sample, and comfortable places to lounge, should you decide to take a break from your escapades ashore. Most tour operators do not neglect to give travelers the chance to bone up on the area they are visiting, and speaking to experienced tour guides or listening to lectures can add to your enjoyment. Rest assured, you can rest, assured that your relaxation will not be disturbed if you do not wish to take on the world every day.

Antarctica Holidays are often “once in a lifetime” trips, and so it pays to plan ahead and get the most out of them. Of course, if you fall in love with the coldest continent, it will certainly reward a return visit!
